Why wireless?
Today’s technology users demand mobility. With laptops replacing desktops and mobile phones replacing landlines, people are used to devices that enable them to be productive anywhere. And increasingly, mobility is about more than just the ability to make a phone call from the elevator or run a desktop application on the road. Wireless devices is where network innovation is focused, leading to new uses for networks that just aren’t possible with wires.

Innovation happens at all levels. At the software level, it means new applications like location-tracking and mapping. At the device level, it means connectivity from iPhones, Blackberries, RFID tags and other gadgets that simply can’t exist in a wired world. And at the infrastructure level, it means Wireless LAN Virtualisation, an architecture that brings to edge networks the same agility, ease-of-use and low total cost of ownership that virtualisation brings to servers, storage and data centre networks.

Wireless LAN Virtualisation isn’t merely a new application that runs on top of existing wireless networks. It’s a fundamentally different way of designing and building networks, using technology designed from the radio layer up to make wireless equivalent to or better than wired in every way. Whether dictated by speed, security, simplicity or financial savings, wireless is now the edge network of choice.

Why Wireless LAN Virtualisation?

Meru’s network architecture makes the wireless LAN more like Ethernet. Every user gets a private, personalised Virtual Port that has all the security, performance and predictability that applications expect from a wire. Meru’s advanced radio technology also makes the network as reliable and scalable as Ethernet, while virtualisation makes it even easier to maintain.

Why an All-Wireless Edge?

With Meru, depending on wireless for everyday enterprise connectivity is no longer just a vision. Meru’s customers include some of the world’s largest all-wireless enterprises, with users in factories, hospitals and outdoor areas where wires simply are not an option. With Meru’s E(z)RF software, wireless is easier to manage than Ethernet. With physical layer security alongside encryption and authentication, it can be more secure than Ethernet. And, by avoiding upgrades to edge switches, Wireless LAN Virtualisation saves money when compared to wires.

Meru and VOIP

With VoIP replacing circuit-switched telephony and wireless replacing wires, the technology is mature and growing. Running VoIP over a wireless network can improve productivity by making users easily reachable through a single number. It can cut costs by reducing consumption of mobile minutes as well as reducing land-line costs. And it can ensure coverage throughout a facility by including areas that traditional mobile phone signals cannot penetrate.

Meru is a leader in wireless VoIP technology, with customers utilising the technology in their facilities since 2003. Wireless LAN Virtualisation makes 802.11 telephony accessible to all. It provides the same mobility benefits as mobile phones but at a lower cost, with a higher call quality and with more advanced features that converge voice and data. The Virtual Cell ensures smooth roaming. The Virtual Port ensures high quality of service, giving the enterprise control over all wireless devices with no proprietary client software.

Meru’s leadership in voice over WLAN is recognised throughout the industry. Meru is a driving force in the standards bodies, heading up the effort to create the first Wi-Fi Alliance certification for enterprise voice.

High Sound Quality
Calls through a Meru wireless LAN system consistently sound better than toll-quality. Data throughput is high and predictable, not adversely affected by the presence of voice on the same network.

Smooth Roaming
Users can move around freely without fear that their calls will be dropped as they roam between different access points’ coverage areas.

Real-Time Security
Meru access points scan for security threats at all times, whether or not they are serving voice, video or other real-time traffic.

Meru VoIP Product Line
The Meru wireless LAN system offers smooth roaming and zero-latency, network-controlled handoff for all applications.
